After using a photo-shopped chalkboard yesterday to document my baby bump, I was on a mission to make the real thing. For the next six months I will be using it as baby update, but afterwards I would like to use it as a menu planner. I had a brief monthly stint as a hostess in high school, and my favorite part about the job was drawing specials on the dry erase board. I can’t wait to get started on my own meal specials. Here is how I made my chalkboard for under $15.00.

How to Make a Chalkboard

1. I knew the exact size I needed for my chalkboard, so I started my search at a local thrift shop. When looking for a frame to use choose one that has a design you like. Some frames will have a wooden backboard, but if it does not, that’s okay.

*The picture does not make a difference since it is going in the trash anyways. I focused on the frame and price, and I found this one for $4.98.

2. The one I chose did not have a wood back, so I went to Lowes and had one cut to fit the frame for around $4.00. Then I just ripped off the paper backing to get to the frame.

3. Since it was slightly beat up, I went to work sanding the edges smooth.

4. Next I sprayed the frame with two coats of primer and then two coats of white spray paint.

5. The more layers of chalkboard paint the better. I painted the plywood with about four coats of chalkboard paint.

6. Once the paint has dried, secure the plywood into the frame and enjoy!

This project was super easy and will be used throughout our house for years. The inexpensive price tag was just the icing on the cake. If you have trouble finding a cheap frame, Hobby Lobby usually has their frame half price. I hope you enjoy your chalkboard as much as I am enjoying mine!
