Pippin + Pearl Decorator Challenge

And above all watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.

RONALD DAHL

I had so much fun designing a room on Polyvore for the Pippin + Pearl Decorator Challenge, I decided to design a few more. Erin is allowing contestants to enter up to five designs for a chance to win one of her paintings. Here are the rules for the contest. Here is a link to the first room I designed.

For my next design I wanted to create a memory wall around the painting. I chose a theme of black frames, so I tried to vary what was in each frame having a few family pictures along with complimenting artwork. I also threw in some variance with a monogram letter and a bronzed deer head.

I designed a bedroom for my next entry. I am obsessed with this light fixture from Ikea. With the light’s atypical design, I wanted to have structure using matching night stands, mirrors, and lamps.

I also like the idea of putting the painting in a home office to help peak creativity!

The Pippin + Pearl Decorator Challenge is accepting entries until April 2nd, so if you have not designed a room yet, there is still time.

Have you designed anything on Polyvore?

Sally’s Pins

To live a creative life we must loose our fear of being wrong.

JOSEPH CHILTON PEARCE

To try and stop the tears from flowing after seeing The Vow tonight, I wanted to share my pins for the week. Thank you Lindsey for remembering to bring Kleenex. For some reason I thought it was going to be all about the love, not bawl your eyes out depressing. It is quite thought provoking so definitely go see it, and while you are at it check out these finds from the week…

Scallops: I think scallops are the strangest food I typically eat, but for some reason I keep coming back to them. I need to stop drooling over this amazing green sauce and scallop combination.

Elephant Nightlight: elephants are my jam. I want all things elephant…including this nightlight to guide me through the night skies.

Spring Outfit: depending on the day it feels like winter or spring here. I vote for spring, so I can wear this outfit all the time.

Project Enhancer: who would have thought to use pushpins to avoid having newspaper all over your art project? Thankfully, someone did so now I can avoid this with all future projects.

Grown-up Twister: I’m feeling good and I think a nice round of twister would be perfect to test my flexibility skills.

Entryway: There isn’t one thing about this room that I don’t like. Is there a way to transport it to my house and switch my color scheme to gray? Yes, please…

Cupcakes: if salted caramel is an option when I am picking out cupcakes, I have to get it. The saltiness is so good with the sweet frosting.

Crab Cake Sliders: get in my belly! Open faced sandwich are so tasty, but with a crab cake on top, OMG!

Hash Browns: Rachel Ray totally made these this week, and I want to try her method.

Coconut Curry Noodles: I could eat curry everyday. I could also eat noodles everyday, so I probably should eat this everyday.

Memory Wall: I love the consistent white frames in this memory wall. I also really like the gray. What a perfect combination!

Dips: I could eat dip all day long, and I am so excited about this blog because of all the different dip variations.

Tiramisu Shooters: I blogged about my love of shooters yesterday, but really they are wonderful for a party.

Wedding: Can one of my friends please get married here so I can stare at the breathtaking views instead of their vows?

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies: green beer used to be my favorite thing about St. Patrick’s Day, but now it might be these cookies.

Favorite Party Date: This shot is from my freshman year of college when Chris drove in from Nebraska to go with me to my date party.

Why are goods by ship called cargo and goods by car called shipment?

Dinning Room Design

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.

PAUL THEROUX

We are hitting the open road and heading towards Kansas today to spend the holiday with our family.

It is always a full car with our luggage and both pugs in their kennels. At least Nellie does not seem to mind the three-hour drive.

In honor of Thanksgiving, I wanted to do a post about our dinning room design project. When we first toured our home, the thing that stuck out to me was the beautiful living and dinning room when I walked in the front door.

I knew I wanted to recreate a similar look. We had a dinning room table that was passed down from my father, but it was a yellow pine that was crafted in Colorado. It was not quite what I was going for, so Chris and I decided to try our first refinishing project.

We started by sanding off the finish of the pine table. We used a wood filler to fill in any cracks. Then we painted on a few coats of dark stain until we achieved the look we wanted. To seal in the finish, we applied a generous coat of polyurethane.

Our spin was not an exact match to our inspiration, but I really love how it turned out. By incorporating a similar large mirror, it kept the open feeling we were going for with views into the living room.

We also decided to create a memory wall to showcase some of our family pictures.

There are so many ways to create a memory wall, and pottery barn does a good job at explaining the basics.

I decided to use a theme of all gold frames. Since I had the frames all touching to maximize the space, I broke up the photos by putting mats in some and a small mirror in the mix. Less is usually more when it comes to pictures displayed in your home.

I think family dinners are so important, and it is nice have a place to eat that you enjoy.

What is your favorite room in your house?
